Threshold of originality and possible transfer to Commons
[edit]I'm considering the transfer of this image to Wikimedia Commons because (with hindsight) it appears not to pass the threshold of originality. All comments greatfully received.
Some relevant considerations:
- Do the designer's statements (in the below-linked summary, including
the central hole is at the Golden Ratio of the radius, and the thickness of the design is also determined by similar principles
) constitute significant doubt as to the freedom of the file? - Previous acknowledgement at WT:COMP in Feb 2011 regarding respect for designer's wishes
- Summary of email discussions with designer/copyright owner, User:Richard Hallas (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) (also Feb 2011)
- The case of files such as File:Windows logo - 2006.svg (deletion discussion initiated Jun 2012)
- If the design is trademarked, the appropriate template could be applied
- If transferred, it could always be nominated for deletion at Commons, where any such discussion would be visible to a wide range of editors with prior experience of such matters
- There's also File:Riscos rool logo cog svgedit fitcanvastocontent.svg (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs) to consider (probably pending the outcome of this discussion)
Please note that this proposal does not diminish the value of the logo or respect for the time spent on its design by Richard Hallas, Justin Fletcher and any others. It's simply that I've gained an increased understanding of such issues over the past couple of years. Very sorry, Richard. All the best. -- Trevj (talk) 10:14, 11 January 2013 (UTC)
