Description
Shiva dansant, Inde, période Cola, Musée Guimet, Paris. Comment: This Nataraj (which was a gift of C.T. Loo) has a mustache, a feature never found in Chola sculpture. It is likely that this bronze dates from the 19th century, and somehow has been accepted into the corpus of Indian Art. There are many dubious sculptures and paintings from CT Loo, and this complex issue deserves further documentation. In illustrating articles on Chola art, photos of controversial bronzes should not be included.
